Ratti to Carat Conversion: Understand Gemstone Weights Before You Buy

Ratti to Carat Conversion

When buying a Navratna gemstone—which includes Ruby, Pearl, Red Coral, Emerald, Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj), Diamond, Blue Sapphire (Neelam), Hessonite (Gomed), and Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia)—you’ll often hear the word ratti used to describe its weight.

But if you’re browsing certified gems or shopping online, you’ll also see carat mentioned. Let’s clear the confusion and understand how to convert between the two.

What is a Ratti?

Ratti is a traditional Indian weight unit still widely used in the gemstone trade, especially for astrological purposes.

There are two kinds:

  • Pakki Ratti: 180 mg (0.90 carat)
  • Kachi Ratti: 120 mg (0.60 carat)

Ratti to Carat Conversion Table

Ratti Type Weight in mg Equivalent in Carat
1 Pakki Ratti 180 mg 0.90 carat
1 Kachi Ratti 120 mg 0.60 carat

Note:
– 1 carat = 200 mg

Where is Kachi Ratti Used?

Kachi Ratti is more commonly used in traditional markets across:

  • Punjab
  • Haryana
  • Rishikesh & Haridwar
  • Parts of Gujarat
  • Parts of Maharashtra

Elsewhere in India, Pakki Ratti is the standard.

How Many Ratti Should I Wear?

Always consult your astrologer first. Each person’s birth chart (kundli) determines the correct stone and weight.

If guidance is unavailable, a general rule of thumb is:

1 ratti per 10 kg of body weight

Example: A person weighing 70 kg may wear a 7-ratti stone (approx. 6.3 carats if using pakki ratti).

Important:

This is only a guideline. Astrological recommendation should always take precedence.

A Note on What We Sell

We only sell gemstones based on carat, which is the internationally accepted unit of weight in the gemstone trade. This ensures transparency, accuracy, and global standardization.

Final Tip

Clarity in weight units is key to getting the right gemstone at the right price. Always ask whether the seller is quoting in pakki or kachi ratti, and cross-check the certified carat weight.
